Greetings from the Rio Chirripó Retreat!
How are you doing back in your home countries? Already planning a visit to our magical mountain? We are looking forward to having you here at our beautiful retreat and to give you an unforgettable Pura Vida experience.
At this time of the year we are fully immersed in the rainy season and we are already longing ourselves for the summer to come. But don’t think we are hibernating; too many ongoing jobs to sit still! Our premises constantly need maintenance and there is also a new construction under way; a real massage cabin where visitors and local clients will be able to enjoy a broad array of hands-on techniques offered by experienced therapists. As soon as the building is finished we hope to post some pictures on our website as well as a listing of the available treatments.
We wish you all the best and send you our warmest greetings!

Medicinal herbs in our area
Although turmeric is native to India and tropical parts of Asia, it grows so well in our gardens as if it were an indigenous plant here on our magical mountain. This year we had an amazing crop and new ones have already been planted. Why? Because we strongly believe in the medicinal properties of this plant.
Chinese, Indians and indigenous tribes have their own traditional uses and Western scientists’ have now recognized its medicinal properties are investigating new applications.
It’s a potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant that lowers cholesterol and protects your liver from the damaging effects of alcohol, toxins and even some pharmaceutical drugs. Externally, it acts as an antiseptic for cuts, burns and bruises and speeds up healing and cell repair. The list of medicinal applications is too long to mention here, but just the fact that it helps to maintain not only physical health, but also supports nervous and immune systems, convinced us that one just can’t eat enough!
Praiseworthy initiative by local farmers
For over a year now, a group of farmers from Canaán and Los Angeles have been studying and applying the principles of organic farming, using micro organisms. This group of almost 25 men and women, motivated by a workshop in a neighboring village, decided to get together on a regular basis and share experiences and knowledge about this particular subject.
Just by mixing leaves, molasses, husk and water and leaving it for 1 month in an anaerobic container, extremely beneficial microorganisms are created, called EM (Effective microorganisms). There are wide ranging applications for EM; it enhances soil fertility, increases crop yields and can even be used against pests. At this time, it is already successfully applied to inoculate farm waste and for pest control in the coffee fields. But also for personal health, it has proven to be successful: some of the farmers started taking it orally and their complaints (most of them of a digestive order) diminished or even disappeared.
Initiatives like this can´t be applauded enough; it is good to see that in a rural area like ours, where until recently chemicals were considered as the only way, people are now become aware of the consequences and are receptive to and experimenting with, new alternative ways.
